From Africa to America

Venture Smith was born in the mid-1700s in Dukandarra, a small village in Guinea, West Africa. As a child, he witnessed the devastating impact of the European slave trade. In 1761, at the tender age of 14, he was captured during a raid on his village and sold to a slave trader.

Years of Enslavement

In 1771, Smith's luck changed when he was sold to Robert Smith, a Quaker farmer from Mount Pleasant, New York. While his new master was not cruel, the conditions of his enslavement remained challenging. Smith continued to yearn for the freedom he had known before.

The Road to Freedom

In 1778, the American Revolution brought a turning point in Smith's life. As the British army occupied New York, he saw an opportunity to escape. With the help of a young woman named Mary Green, Smith fled to the safety of the Connecticut countryside.

For the next six years, Smith worked as a hired laborer and saved enough money to Free Download his freedom. In 1784, he proudly proclaimed himself a free man, becoming one of the first legally freed Africans in America.

A Life of Purpose

After gaining his freedom, Smith dedicated his life to aiding others. He became a successful businessman, owning a farm and a general store in Connecticut. He also became a prominent abolitionist, speaking out against the horrors of slavery.

Smith's narrative, published in 1798, was a powerful weapon in the fight against slavery. It provided a firsthand account of the brutality of the trade and the resilience of those who survived. The book became widely read and helped to shape public opinion on the issue.

Legacy and Impact

Venture Smith died in 1805, but his legacy continues to inspire generations. His narrative remains a classic of African American literature, offering a poignant and unforgettable account of slavery and the pursuit of freedom.
