About the Author
Hanaa Edwar is an Iraqi-American writer and activist. She was born in Baghdad in 1979 and lived there until she was 19 years old. She is the author of the memoir Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam, which was published in 2015.
Edwar is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan Law School. She has worked as a human rights lawyer and a journalist. She is currently a senior fellow at the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East at the Atlantic Council.
Edwar is a passionate advocate for human rights and democracy in the Middle East. She has spoken out against the oppressive regimes of Saddam Hussein and Bashar al-Assad. She is also a strong supporter of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.
