By John Abbott

Hernando Cortez was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition that conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico. He was born in Medellin, Spain, in 1485. He was the son of a minor nobleman, and he received a good education. He studied law and philosophy at the University of Salamanca.

In 1504, Cortez went to the New World. He served in the Spanish army in Cuba. In 1519, he led an expedition to Mexico. He landed on the coast of Mexico with a force of 500 men. He marched inland and quickly conquered the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan.
