An was born in Hanoi in 1930. He studied journalism at the University of Saigon and began working as a reporter for the Time-Life news magazine in 1957.

In 1964, An was recruited by the CIA to spy on the North Vietnamese government. He agreed to the mission, and his CIA handlers gave him the codename "Golden Boy."

For the next four years, An lived a double life. He continued to work as a reporter for Time, but he also secretly reported to the CIA on the activities of the North Vietnamese government.

An's work for the CIA was extremely dangerous. He had to meet with his CIA handlers in secret, and he was constantly at risk of being discovered by the North Vietnamese government.

Despite the risks, An continued to work for the CIA. He provided the agency with valuable information about the North Vietnamese government, and he helped to thwart several North Vietnamese attacks.

In 1968, An's cover was blown. He was arrested by the North Vietnamese government and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

An was released from prison in 1988. He returned to the United States and wrote a book about his experiences as a CIA operative. The book, titled "The Double Life of Pham Xuan An," was published in 1990.

An's story is a fascinating tale of courage, deception, and intrigue. It is a story that sheds light on the hidden world of espionage and the sacrifices that people make to protect their country.
