An was born in Hanoi in 1930. He studied journalism at the University of Saigon and began working as a reporter for the Time-Life news magazine in 1957.

In 1968, An's cover was blown. He was arrested by the North Vietnamese government and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
An was released from prison in 1988. He returned to the United States and wrote a book about his experiences as a CIA operative. The book, titled "The Double Life of Pham Xuan An," was published in 1990.
An's story is a fascinating tale of courage, deception, and intrigue. It is a story that sheds light on the hidden world of espionage and the sacrifices that people make to protect their country.
