Prelude to the Expedition

The story of Fuchs and Hillary's crossing of Antarctica begins in the early 20th century. As adventurers and scientists sought to conquer the last uncharted continent, a British expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914-1917 came within 97 miles of the South Pole. However, it was not until 1949 that an expedition led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl made it to the pole.

Inspired by Heyerdahl's achievement, British explorer Sir Vivian Fuchs proposed a new expedition that would cross the entire Antarctic continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. Fuchs's plan was ambitious, as no one had ever before attempted such a feat.

Joining Forces: Fuchs and Hillary

In 1955, Fuchs invited New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, who had recently become famous for his ascent of Mount Everest, to join his expedition. Hillary agreed, and the two men began planning their journey.

Fuchs and Hillary's expedition was funded by the British government and private donations. They assembled a team of 12 men, including scientists, engineers, and support staff. The team was equipped with the latest equipment and supplies, including 100 sled dogs and 12 Sno-Cats.

Crossing the Icy Wilderness

The expedition set out from the Weddell Sea in November 1957. The team faced extreme weather conditions, including blizzards, whiteouts, and temperatures below -100 degrees Fahrenheit. They also had to navigate through treacherous ice fields and crevasses.

Despite the challenges, Fuchs and Hillary's team made steady progress. They reached the South Pole on January 19th, 1958, and continued their journey across the Ross Ice Shelf. The expedition finally reached the Ross Sea on March 2nd, 1958.

Scientific Discoveries and Legacy

In addition to their historic crossing, Fuchs and Hillary's expedition also made important scientific discoveries. They collected data on Antarctic weather patterns, ice conditions, and wildlife. The expedition also helped to establish the Transantarctic Mountains as a major geological feature.

The crossing of Antarctica by Fuchs and Hillary was a major achievement in the exploration of our planet. It demonstrated the indomitable spirit of human endeavor and the power of international cooperation.
