Early Life

Anandibai Joshee was born in 1865 in Kalyan, India. Her father was a wealthy merchant and her mother was a devout Hindu. Joshee was a bright and inquisitive child who loved to learn. However, her family did not believe in educating girls and they refused to send her to school.

Despite her family's objections, Joshee was determined to get an education. She began by secretly studying at home. She would often hide books under her bed and read them at night. When her family found out about her studies, they were furious. They forbade her from reading and even threatened to disown her.

Undeterred, Joshee continued to study in secret. She eventually found a tutor who was willing to teach her. With his help, she was able to complete her primary education.

Marriage and Medical Education

In 1880, at the age of 15, Joshee was married to Gopalrao Joshee, a wealthy widower who was 20 years her senior. Joshee's husband was a progressive thinker who supported her desire to get an education. He enrolled her in the American Methodist Episcopal Mission School in Pune, where she studied for two years.

In 1883, Joshee traveled to the United States to attend the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was one of the first Indian women to study medicine in the United States. Joshee faced many challenges during her time in the United States. She had to overcome language barriers, cultural differences, and the prejudice of some of her classmates. However, she persevered and eventually graduated in 1886.

After graduating from medical school, Joshee returned to India and began practicing medicine. She opened a dispensary in Pune where she treated women and children. Joshee was a dedicated doctor who was committed to providing quality medical care to her patients. She also worked to promote women's education and health.

Death and Legacy

Joshee died in 1887 at the age of 22 from tuberculosis. Although her life was cut short, she left a lasting legacy. She was a pioneer for women's education and health in India. Her story continues to inspire women and girls around the world.

In 1994, the Indian government issued a postage stamp in her honor. In 2002, the University of Pennsylvania established the Anandibai Joshee Fellowship in Women's Health. This fellowship provides financial support to Indian women who are pursuing medical degrees in the United States.
