The Early Years

John Waters was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946. His father was a plumber and his mother was a homemaker. Waters had a difficult childhood. He was often bullied by his classmates and he felt like an outsider. Waters found solace in movies, and he began making his own films at a young age.

The Dreamlanders included such actors as Divine, Mink Stole, and Mary Vivian Pearce. Divine was Waters's muse and alter ego. Mink Stole is a character actress who has appeared in many of Waters's films, including Polyester and Serial Mom. Mary Vivian Pearce is a former nurse who has appeared in many of Waters's films, including Hairspray and A Dirty Shame.

The Cult Films

Waters's films began to gain a wider audience in the 1980s. His films Polyester and Hairspray were both critical and commercial successes. Waters's films continued to be controversial, but they also became more mainstream.
