Gardiner, a British citizen of Dutch-Jewish descent, was just 16 years old when he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands. He spent the next three years in the camp, living in constant fear of being deported to Auschwitz or another death camp.
Despite the horrors he witnessed, Gardiner never gave up hope. He smuggled food to his fellow prisoners, organized educational programs, and even staged a theater production. His indomitable spirit kept him alive through the darkest of times.
In One Way Ticket From Westerbork, Gardiner vividly recounts his experiences in the camp. He describes the daily humiliations, the hunger, the cold, and the constant threat of violence. But he also tells the stories of the brave men and women who risked their lives to help others. He writes about the friendships he formed with his fellow prisoners, and the love that he found amidst the despair.
One Way Ticket From Westerbork is a powerful and moving testament to the human spirit. It is a story of survival, resilience, and hope. It is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
