Vargas was born in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul in 1882. He studied law and entered politics in his early 20s. He served as governor of Rio Grande do Sul from 1928 to 1930. In 1930, he led a military coup that overthrew the government of President Washington Luis.

Vargas's first term as president was marked by a number of populist policies, including the creation of a minimum wage, the establishment of social security, and the expansion of education and healthcare. He also promoted economic nationalism, and he sought to reduce Brazil's dependence on foreign investment. He remained popular with the masses and was re-elected in 1934.

However, Vargas's second term was marked by increasing authoritarianism. He suppressed dissent, closed down newspapers, and arrested political opponents. In 1937, he imposed a new constitution that gave him dictatorial powers. He remained in power until 1945, when he was overthrown by a military coup.

Vargas returned to power in 1951 and served as president until his death in 1954. During his second term, he continued to implement populist policies, but he also faced increasing economic and political challenges. He died by suicide in 1954.

Vargas was a complex and controversial figure. He was a charismatic leader who was popular with the masses, but he was also an authoritarian who suppressed dissent. His legacy is still debated in Brazil today.
